The test results

A few days ago I mentioned about a peanut butter alternative I found to try with Lance. I am pleased to say that we did try it and we did have good results.

Lance was a little skeptical at first but he was willing to try it.

I sat him down at the table and I explained to him that it could be a “fail” like the other attempts but if he was willing to try, I would let him indulge in “peanut butter” and “nutella.” He was willing to give it a try. He was headache free at the time so it was the best time to try it.

For those that missed it, this is what I found. It is not soy based. It is not nut based. It is legume based, however. It is made from yellow peas.

Initially, I did not tell him what it was that we were going to try. I sat him at the table with the jars’ labels not facing him. I then turned them around so he could read them.

It took a couple of minutes.

This face was worth the wait! That tongue was priceless…

Him trying to get the jar open as fast as he could was worth every penny I spent on these 2 jars. I had tears welling up in my eyes. I am not lying. Just to see the joy was enough for me.

I gave him 2 pieces of bread. That was enough for a half sandwich of each – nutella and peanut butter. I did the same. I wanted to know what I was giving him after all.

First bite. The face was a little worrisome on my end, but his description was good enough for me. It is a little grainy. It tastes good though. A little dry.

This was the size of the bite that he took. It was not a small bite. He went back for another bite. So the texture was not a huge turn off. When he took smaller bites, he did not notice it as much.

I agreed with him on the texture. I also agreed that smaller bites helped.

Then it was time to taste test the peanut butter version.

“It tastes like peanut butter!” He was right in that description. I agreed with him. It was a mild version of peanut butter but it was indeed peanut butter tasting.

Here he is describing the texture as I am spreading it on my bread. It spreads like peanut butter. It smells like peanut butter. It tastes like peanut butter.

This was his face after finishing both half sandwiches and finishing a glass of milk. That smile says it all.

I then started the clock. Headaches start as fast as 30 minutes or take as long as 3 hours to show up depending on the alternative. We started watching the clock.

This was his opinion of this alternative peanut butter product. This is not his opinion of so many of the others.

After the 3 hour mark, he was still headache free. He had another sandwich. I let him eat as much as he wanted over a 72 hour period. We were trying to flood his system with as much of it as we could to see if we could trigger that headache response before we sent him off to school with it in his lunch. So in the evening after school if he wanted a sandwich for dinner, he could have one. The good news is that he has not had a headache while eating this so far. I am very happy and we are already 2 jars of each in. Yes, I had to go back and buy another jar of each.
