Breakfast with my little boy!

After the experience with Lance throwing up at Cub Scout Day Camp yesterday evening, I had the thought that it would be nice for him to have a bigger breakfast and a much smaller lunch. The idea was to get more food in him for breakfast and just feed him more of a snack for lunch before he went out the door for Day Camp. They would be eating dinner at 4:40PM anyway so it was not like he was going to be starving with the plethora of snacks he also had packed in his bucket. I am pretty positive that his choice of menu items yesterday were NOT the cause of his vomiting but there was a lot in his stomach when he did throw up. At least with a really good breakfast I knew he would not be all that hungry for a while.

Since I had an entire loaf of bread to use up, I had a plan cooking…

This is what homemade French Toast Looks like when it is made with a 3.5 day old loaf of homemade bread. It appears that we might be running a little low on homemade syrup.
I made 4 loaves of bread when I made dinner for the Sister Missionaries on Saturday night. I knew that we would not eat all that bread, but I knew that Lance and I would enjoy eating it the next couple of days as well.
Of course after a few days it starts to get dry. What to do with it when it starts to dry out? Make homemade French Toast.
I had actually never made it with my homemade bread before, I had always used left over French Bread loaves or something fancier like that so this was a new experience for me as well.
Lance was so excited. “You are using your really good bread!”
Lance was so excited. He was a little put out that I made him pause long enough for me to get a picture of his face. How could I not take a picture of that face?
Look at how good that looks! There were some differences in making French Toast with homemade bread. First, it is not as absorbent as store bought bread so soaking up the French Toast mixture took a little bit longer. Once I did get it to soak it up, it also took it a little bit longer to cook it. The texture was different on the French Toast made from the homemade bread. It was not an offensive texture and it was certainly delicious, it was just different. Lance did not complain about it at all. His only complaint is that he could not taste enough of the cinnamon.
I used a 3 slices of Mrs. Bairds Round Top Bread to finish off the mixture that was left because I ran out of homemade bread and it absorbed the mixture like a magical sponge. Sucked it right up. So much so getting it out of the dish onto the pan was interesting. Flipping those slices of bread then became interesting. They became pieces of slop on the pan. Needless to say those slices (aka slop) ended up in the trash. When compared to their homemade delicacies they were not going to come anywhere near my lips. It just was not going to happen. They looked awful. Lance saw them and said, “What happened here?”
I think Lance’s face says it all. He scarfed it down. He was in pure heaven! He even went back for some more. There might have even been a couple of “yum” responses thrown in there. I love this kid.
I will definitely consider making a couple of extra loaves of bread on purpose just to do this again.
