Today was Stake Conference for the Klein Texas Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I would say that it is not a big deal, but it kind of is when your stake is bigger than the Stake Center. We are split into two sessions and then I am not entirely sure that two sessions are enough to hold us comfortably any more. Our stake is just growing dramatically.
Less than a month ago they took 4 wards (Memorial Springs, Klein, Kleinwood, and Parkway) and made a 5th ward (Gleannloch Farms). It is amazing to watch that we have been in the same house for 13 years now and lived in 3 wards and 2 stakes. We already know that this is only the current count as the church has bought property just on the other side of the railroad tracks from us to place another stake center on. We know that these changes are only temporary for us and change is an evidence that the Lord’s work is being done here on the earth.
Alas, I digress…
The Klein Texas Stake consists of 12 wards and 1 branch – so essentially 13 congregations. That is very large. When you think about how a building typically holds 3-4 wards on a typical Sunday and those wards are not overlapping more than 2 at a time, that is a lot of people to get in a building. It is also a lot of cars to park in a parking lot and areas surrounding the building. Fortunately, it is done with grace and finesse.
There are plenty of hymns sung and uplifting messages shared with us during the 1.5-2 hour meeting. It is a great meeting all the way around.
This does not mean that it is necessarily an engaging meeting…as we looked over and this is what we found…
That is right, it was not just Lance who was suffering from another headache sound asleep on the pew next to us, it was Andrew and Kyle also asleep during the meeting. They might try to convince us that their eyes were just closed and they were listening, but I know better. I will admit to dozing off myself a few times. When the eyes are closed and you are “listening with your eyes closed” there is a tendency for your head to bob a few times as well.
In spite of my confession of head bobbing, aka dozing off, I am glad I came. President Rawson always gets up and asks the question, “Aren’t you glad you came?” Really I am usually really glad I came. It is always a great meeting. We are always spiritually edified and uplifted. And you know what? Even though my children were asleep and probably do not remember a single word that was said during this time they were asleep, they will be blessed for simply being there. Sometimes we are simply blessed for obedience for doing what we are supposed to be doing even if that is just going through the motions. Today they were tired, but they were at church where they belonged.
