Quick Read

If you’re busy like I am, you are probably always looking for a quick read. I found just that. I started reading this book yesterday afternoon shortly before loading an airplane from Atlanta to Houston. I finished it this morning before 9am. I recommend it to anyone who wants to save money.

Shop Smart, Save More: Learn the Grocery Game and Save Hundreds of Dollars a Month! (by Teri Gault with Sheryl Berk)

Some of you might be rolling your eyes right about now as I am not shy and tell anyone who asks about The Grocery Game and what it has done for me. The fact for me is that it has made things better for me at least in the grocery department.

I do have to say that I was not impressed with the sub-title so much as I didn’t learn as much about The Grocery Game from this book as I have from playing the game itself. Yes, it is a game – it is fun.

The part that I found useful was the “how to pick your store” section. Now, I’ve discovered this on my own by playing the game, but it all clicked and made sense. It reaffirmed that it was OK to shop around and other places, but it wasn’t necessary. It reaffirmed for me that sometimes the best deals are found at the most expensive store. It also assured me that it was OK to shop at a store that was convenient.

I also found that the charts and things in the book were helpful in getting me thinking. I found the charts on the “categorical trends” insightful even though they are not set in stone. I was not surprised by the fact that they vary from region to region based on weather and other things. While I am not a fan of her chart for tracking her freezer goods, it has gotten me to thinking about what would be a good way to track my own freezer goods in addition to those things in my pantry.

Now it isn’t all about the savings. There are recipes and party planning ideas, etc.

All in all it was a good read. I personally wish that it had been a bit more elaborated and in depth. It was a quick, easy easy and I did learn a few things from it. I just wish it would have done more for those of us who are playing the game already but want to do even more. I do recommend it to anyone who needs or is looking for a way to save money at the grocery store for all of your food and basic household needs. It will give you an idea, but it won’t tell you exactly how to do it. It just touches on it. The tools for the rest are at the website, and I totally recommend anyone use the $1 trial if you are ready to make that plunge and get started.
